Dentures

We understand how missing teeth can affect your ability to eat, speak and smile properly. Whether you've lost a few or all your natural teeth, dentures are an effective tooth replacement option that can improve your overall health and your appearance. Dr. DeVor offers several dental treatment options for tooth replacement and can help you get back on the road to optimal oral health.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are removable dental appliances that replace top and bottom teeth and surrounding tissues. Most dentures are made of acrylic resin and are designed to look like natural teeth. Dentures prevent facial muscles from sagging due to missing teeth, which can make you look older. Dentures also help you eat and speak normally and can improve your sense of well-being and confidence.

Dental Treatment: Types of Dentures

Complete dentures are used when all your teeth are missing and may be either immediate or conventional. Immediate dentures allow patients to have teeth while healing of the gums and bone takes place. Because gum tissues shrink and change shape during the healing process, more permanent conventional dentures aren't made until the gum tissue has completely healed, which may take a few months.

Partial dentures are used to fill in the spaces between natural teeth. They're usually held in place by metal clips that attach to adjacent teeth. Partials not only fill in gaps but can prevent existing teeth from shifting or breaking.

What Is the Process for Getting Dentures?

Dentures require several appointments. First, precise impressions of your mouth are taken and sent to a dental laboratory where technicians create your custom-made dentures. Several "try-in" appointments are usually necessary to perform adjustments and ensure a comfortable fit and feel and a natural appearance.

When you receive new dentures, it's normal to experience soreness, increased salivation and difficulty speaking and eating. As your muscles and tissues get used to your new dentures, these issues subside. Dentures usually require multiple adjustments and may take some getting used to, but they are attractive, durable and effective teeth replacements that last many years with proper care.

Caring for Dentures

Take your dentures out at night and place them in a container with water and a denture-cleaning solution. Brushing your gums, your tongue and the roof of your mouth with a soft-bristled toothbrush stimulates circulation in your tissues and helps remove plaque. Visiting your dentist for regular checkups and dental treatment helps to keep your mouth healthy and ensure a comfortable fit.
