Orthodontics: Traditional Braces Or Invisalign

View Video

Dr. DeVor understands that orthodontics can play a crucial role in improving your smile and your overall oral health. Although traditional braces and Invisalign both straighten teeth, certain factors must be taken into consideration when deciding which treatment option is best for you.

Braces
Traditional braces have been used in orthodontics for many decades and have a well-established treatment history. Braces typically consist of metal or ceramic brackets that are cemented to the teeth and connected with wires and tiny rubber bands. They are extremely efficient at fixing complex tooth, bite and jaw alignment issues. Traditional braces aren't removable, and brackets and wires can sometimes rub, poke and cause sore spots. They're also much more noticeable than Invisalign. The care and maintenance of metal braces can present a challenge. With traditional braces, your diet is limited no sticky, hard or crunchy foods like popcorn and candy. Your oral hygiene routine is also a little more involved. It's vital to clean your teeth and braces properly to avoid decay. With traditional braces, you can expect to visit your dentist about every 4-6 weeks for adjustments. Each case is different, but the average length of orthodontic treatment using traditional braces can range anywhere from 18 months to three years.

Invisalign
The Invisalign system uses a series of custom-made clear removable aligners made of BPA-free polyurethane plastic. They gradually shift teeth over time to close gaps, correct your bite, straighten teeth and reduce overcrowding. Invisalign clear aligners tend to be more comfortable than traditional metal braces and are easier to care for. They're an efficient, affordable orthodontic treatment for less complex cases. These clear, almost invisible aligners can be removed for eating and brushing your teeth, but their effectiveness depends greatly on patient compliance. For best results, aligners should be worn at least 20-22 hours a day. You change to a new set of aligners every two weeks and visit your dentist to check your progress every 4-6 weeks. The average case takes about 12 months.

Weighing Your Options
Adults and teens with mild malocclusion (imperfect bite) who want to discreetly close gaps and straighten teeth are good candidates for Invisalign. Because of the importance of patient compliance, Invisalign is not suitable for young children. Patients with more complex orthodontic issues, such as a large overbite, severely overcrowded teeth or teeth that need to be rotated or moved vertically, typically need treatment with more traditional orthodontics such as metal or ceramic braces, brackets, wires and bands. Our dentist will do a thorough examination of your mouth, take x-rays to get a good look at your teeth and discuss the orthodontic treatment options that will work best to improve your smile and your oral health.

Clear Aligner Therapy treatment is an effective solution for crooked teeth and a jaw that is out of alignment.

Most treatments require brackets to be bonded to your teeth and a wire running from tooth to tooth.
Once your teeth have been repositioned, you may be required to wear a temporary retainer to keep your teeth in position. Upon completion of your treatment, your teeth will be straight and beautiful, improving your overall health and confidence.
