Dental Bridge Specialist in Lakewood and Cleveland, OH, and Surrounding Areas
A dental bridge is an excellent option when a patient is missing a small number of teeth, leaving a gap between two healthy teeth. Natural looking and permanent, a bridge can restore confidence as well as the ability to chew properly.
Why Do I Need a Dental Bridge?
A bridge is a permanent solution that improves confidence, maintains the proper shape of the face, and provides a strong chewing surface. It also prevents the teeth on either side of the gap from shifting, helping to maintain the proper shape of the bite. As the name suggests, a dental bridge spans the gap between the teeth with a false tooth called a pontic. The pontic is attached to a dental crown, placed on healthy teeth on either side of the gap, by devices called abutments. The abutments provide a firm foundation to hold the bridge in place. There are three options for dental bridge materials: porcelain, gold, and a metal-free porcelain composite. Our dentists can explain each option's benefits and help you decide which is the right one for you. Most insurance covers this type of procedure.
How Does The Dental Bridge Procedure Work?
A dental bridge will take several visits to complete. At the first visit, the dentist will inject an anesthetic in the gum near the teeth on either side of the gap. The teeth will be carefully shaped, either by filing or filling. The abutment crowns will be fit securely to provide a firm foundation for the bridge. An impression of the gap and surrounding teeth will be taken so that a bridge may be designed for a precise fit by the laboratory. A temporary bridge will be cemented into place until the permanent bridge arrives, which can take a few weeks. Once the permanent, custom-created bridge arrives, it will be permanently attached to the prepared crowns. A dental bridge can last ten years with excellent oral care, so follow-up care and proper oral health habits are important to extend the life of the bridge.
